The Sanitation Challenge for Ghana challenges Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in Ghana to team up with their citizens, innovators and solvers to design and implement liquid waste management strategies to transform the livelihoods of Ghana’s urban centres.
Ghana’s sanitation coverage stands at 15%. Sanitation has been structurally underfunded and less prioritised. To put sanitation on the agenda and encourage local politicians to prioritise and invest in sanitation, the Sanitation Challenge for Ghana was launched.
The prize will reward municipalities who successfully develop and implement innovative integrated urban sanitation plans. Winning plans will combine a mix of network and non-network sanitation systems so as to offer suitable and affordable services to all city inhabitants.
Overall there is a £1.43M prize pool available for the best sanitation strategies
In 2016 the Duapa Award recognised 21 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies for their urban liquid waste management strategies. Three District Assemblies received an award of up to 75,000 GBP.
The Dignified City Award will be awarded in December 2018.
